Betty Bob Jones

Betty Bob Scotten Jones died peacefully on April 10, 2018 in Sedalia, Mo.  She loved her family, cherished her friends, thrived in her community and was thankful for the life she was able to lead. She will be missed.

She was born on March 6, 1924, the daughter of Peter V. and Lula Ficken Scotten and lived in Sedalia and Pettis County all her life.  She graduated from Smith Cotton in 1942 and from Central Missouri in 1945 with a BA in Mathematics. Throughout her life she continued to hold friendships from those years dear to her.  She was close to her extended family, particularly her sister, Mary Jane Bailey, nieces, nephews, cousins, and their spouses, and a lifetime of friends.

On March 9, 1946 she married Van G. Jones.  Van and Betty Bob raised their children in Sedalia and at the Jones Farm northwest of town, where they moved in 1969. Van and Betty Bob were married for 62 years before Van passed away ten years ago.

Betty Bob was a long time educator with the Sedalia Public Schools, retiring in 1987, but never far from her active interest in learning and getting to know people and the history of places and things.

Betty Bob was a member of the Broadway Presbyterian Church, where she was an Elder and active in many pursuits for the church.  She had many interests – P.E.O., Sorosis, Pettis County Historical Society, Missouri Teachers Association, Book Club, Friends of Arrow Rock, and numerous bridge clubs throughout the years.

Betty Bob is survived by 4 children: Catherine Tatum (David) of Germantown, Tennessee, David Jones (Terri) of Salt Lake City, Utah, Spencer Jones of Kansas City and Nancy Jones of Kansas City; 6 grandchildren: Ann Tatum Lankford, Leigh Tatum, Sarah Jones Boe, Alex Jones, and Nicole and Chris Jones; and 8 great grandchildren, Matthew, Micah, and Suzanne Lankford, Grace and Alfie Boe, and Halle, Sidney and Griffin Backman.

She took great pride in the character and accomplishments of her children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews and their families, instilling in them the power of knowledge, the joy of wondering, and the importance of family.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, April 14, at Broadway Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Rob Hughes officiating.

Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, April 13, at Heckart Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to Broadway Presbyterian Church in Betty Bob’s name, or to State Fair Community College Foundation to benefit the Betty Bob Jones Nursing Scholarship.
