Delbert Lee Steffens, of Sedalia, was born October 24, 1929, son of Ernest and Emma Mueller Steffens of Cole Camp, MO, and died Monday, November 11, 2024 at Primrose Assisted Living in Sedalia. He was baptized in the Christian faith on November 5, 1929, by Rev. O. L. Bernthal at Zion Lutheran Church. On March 29, 1942, he was confirmed by Rev. Julies Bauer at Zion Lutheran Church. His confirmation text was Hebrews 10:23.
He received his elementary education at Fordney country school near Cole Camp and Zion Lutheran School in Lincoln, MO. In 1946 he graduated from Cole Camp High School.
He began his working career at Wagner Bros. farm in Alma, MO in May 1947. In February of 1952 he was inducted in the U.S. Army, receiving his basic training and leader's course at Fort Riley, KS. In October 1952, he was placed in the 704th Ordnance Co. of the 4th Infantry Division near Frankfurt, Germany. In July 1953, he was transferred to USAREUR Ordnance School near Fussen, Germany. Following his discharge from the Army in 1954, he was employed by O'Connor Chevrolet-Buick as a mechanic. In 1964 he began working for Missouri Public Service Co. as mechanic and garage foreman. His later years, prior to retirement, were spent as Transportation Administrator working from the home office in Raytown, MO.
On September 4, 1955, he married Mildred L. Sander of Alma, MO. They have three children, James (Jim) and his wife, Linda; Janet and her husband, Anthony; Rebecca (Becky) and her husband, Rev. Craig Otto. In addition to his children, he has five grandchildren, Zachery (Amy) and Jacob (Elizabeth) Steffens, Emma Auger (Chris), Vincent Otto (Dana) and Abigail Torres that are very dear to his heart. He also has three beautiful great-grandchildren, Atticus Steffens, Teddy Auger, and Fitz Steffens that he loved deeply.
Delbert was an active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church since 1955 and served on many boards and committees. He attended Bible classes for many years and led studies, as well as teaching Sunday School.
His family was very important to him, and he supported his children in their various activities - scouting, 4-H, sporting events, etc.
Retirement was spent gardening, volunteering in church and community, meeting with his retired co-workers for lunch, and attending activities of the grandchildren.
In addition to his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, he is survived by three nieces and two nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mildred; parents; and two brothers, Arnold and Harold; and a son-in-law, Wes Sydow.
The family will receive friends beginning at 10:00 am Saturday, November 16, 2024 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Sedalia, with services to be held at 11:00 am with Rev. Jeremy Freeman officiating.
Burial will follow in Highland Sacred Gardens.
Memorial contributions are suggested to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church or St. Paul’s Lutheran School in care of Heckart Funeral Home.
