She was born in Marshall, Missouri, on November 1, 1931. She was one of three children born to Harold H. and Ruth E. (Davis) Schanz. She graduated from Hughesville High School in 1948 and from Central Missouri State College in Warrensburg, Missouri, in June 1952, receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in Education with a major in Music.
On June 3, 1953, she was married to Wilbur J. Hendricks in Dufur, Oregon. Four children were born to this union: Ladorna A. Hendricks on February 8, 1954, James W. Hendricks on April 10, 1957, Julie R. Hendricks on November 19, 1961, and John L. Hendricks on October 17, 1966.

In 2002, they moved to Camas, Washington to be close to their children.
In 2004 her husband preceded her in death. On November 5, 2005, she married Robert E. Smith and they continued to live in Camas until her death.
