Earl L. Mccleery

Earl L. McCleery 79, of Tipton, passed away Monday, December 17, 2018 at his home.

Earl Lee McCleery was born in Fulton, MO, on September 27, 1939 but soon came to Tipton to spend the rest of his life.  His parents were Earl Udell and Stella (Wilkes) McCleery.  Earl and his brother Teddy Joe were under the care of their grandmother Mrs. Iona Wilkes for the most part.

Besides family and work, Earl loved to fish, mainly crappie.  John Hoff was a great fishing buddy in the early years and later he and Buck Jones spent many long hours at Truman Lake.  Earl was a man of few words who traveled light through this world which fits a fisherman’s life style.  He operated under the theory – “Better to keep your mouth shut and let people think you’re a fool than to open it and remove all doubt.”  Earl didn’t show his emotions much but loved his wife Lanell and was very proud of his children and grandchildren.  Earl was a good man who didn’t glory in his own accomplishments and shied away from praise.  He was a postal clerk at the Tipton Post office for 34 years.  Earl served in the US Army for two years in France and state side.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Lanell; son, Brian McCleery and his wife Nancy; grandchildren, Garrett, Brenna, Addison and Grady McCleery of Liberty; daughter, April Watkins and her husband Bill of Jefferson City; sister-in-law, Mary McCleery of Tipton.

He was preceded in death by both of his parents and one brother Teddy Joe.

Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 22, 2018 at the Tipton Methodist Church, with a memorial service at 11:00.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Tipton Methodist Church.

Arrangements are in the care of Heckart Funeral Home in Sedalia.
