Gerald Francis Norton, 86, of Clinton, passed away Thursday, January 9, 2025, at StoneBridge Villa Marie in Jefferson City.
He was born February 27, 1938, in Fairfax, MO, a son of the late Ralph V. and Maude M. (Thompson) Norton. On February 19, 1959, he married Merna Becker, who preceded him in death on November 2, 1993. On December 10, 1994, he married Carol D. Thomas, who survives.
Gerald was a graduate of Fairfax High School and then went into the Air Force, serving from 1957 to 1965 during the Vietnam era. He then transitioned to civil service where he worked as a mechanics instructor and later in personnel. He retired in 1994 at age 55. Along the way, he took night classes and earned an associate’s degree from Parkland College. During his time in the civil service, he lived for three years in the Azores from where he adopted his daughter, Filipa. He was of the Lutheran faith.
He enjoyed golfing, camping, traveling, square dancing, woodworking, making stained glass, and doing crafts. He also volunteered extensively during his retirement.
Gerald had a great sense of humor and liked being around people and being involved in the community.
In addition to his wife, Carol, survivors include three children, Marie Hunt (Steve), Doug Norton (Leslie), and Mike Norton (Lisa); a sister, Sharon Abbott; 14 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his first wife, Merna, and his parents, he was preceded in death by two children, Gregory Norton, who died in infancy, and Filipa Norton; a brother, Charles Norton; a sister, Margaret Root; and three grandchildren.
The family will celebrate Gerald’s life at a later date.
Memorial contributions are suggested to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Lutheran Hour Ministries, in care of Heckart Funeral Home.
