Helen Brazos (Mrs. John), 100, of Sedalia, died Wednesday, June 8, 2022, at the Missouri Veterans Home in Mexico, MO.
She was born September 1, 1921, in Boswell, IN, daughter of Elizabeth and Joseph Wildman. She was orphaned at age eight and raised by Hazel Timmons of Hoopeston, IL.
She was an R.N. and a Veteran of World War II, serving in the European Theater of Operations from 1944-1946.
In 1946, she married James S. West M.D., and leaves one son, Kevin West (Deborah), of Ashland, MO.
In 1963, she married John C. Brazos, M.D., a practicing urologist in Smithton and Sedalia. She leaves two stepchildren, Bruce Brazas (Janet), of Batavia, IL, and John Brazas, Jr., of Rochester, NY; one stepson-in-law, Richard Whelove; eight grandchildren, Brian, Ryan, Megan, Jeremy, Shawn, Shannon, Asia and Ona; twelve great-grandchildren, Adeline, Kayla, Jacob, Elyse, Brandon, Independence, Luke, Beau, Finley, Emerson, Benjamin, Adelynn; a niece, Karen Hogg (Kim), of Akron, OH; and a close friend Tina.
She was preceded in death by her husband(s), parents; a stepson, Blaise; a stepdaughter, Barbara Brazos; brother, James; and two sisters, Rosemary Kuhlman and Charlene Dill.
Helen was a member of Smithton United Methodist Church for many years, and in 1996, transferred her membership to First Christian Church in Sedalia. She was a member of Sorosis, past president of Helen G. Steele Music Club, Pettis County Auxiliary, Church Women United, Smithton Garden Club, VFW Post 2591, lifetime member of Bothwell Hospital Auxiliary, and along with Ilene VanDyke, was responsible for establishing the Auxiliary and the Candy Stripers.
Friends may pay their respects and sign the guest book from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Friday, June 10, 2022, at Heckart Funeral Home in Sedalia.
A private graveside service will be held at a later date at the Smithton Cemetery.
The family suggests memorials to Smithton United Methodist Church, First Christian Church or Helen G. Steele Music Club.
