Helen E. Ellis
Helen Estelle (Engler) Ellis, 92, of Pettis County passed away on June 27, 2018 in Sedalia.
Helen was born on February 1, 1926 in Kansas City, Missouri and grew up in Sedalia. The daughter of Marshall H. “Toots” Engler and Stella (Nicholson) Engler, she was well known in the 16th and Grand Avenue neighborhood as Tomboy.
She was a member Smith-Cotton HS Class of 1944; and on June 11, 1944 was united in marriage to Frank Rodney Ellis (of Sedalia) who was serving in the U.S Army Quartermaster Corps in Alaska. They were married by Rev. Kokendoffer and made First Christian their life-long church. They were both roller skaters and big-band dancers. Together they had one son; F. Rod Ellis II. A full-time home-maker and caretaker, Helen worked for many years in downtown Sedalia including sixteen years at C.W. Flower Company where she known for her friendliness and sense of humor.
Helen was an avid supporter of many local and Missouri things especially Sedalia & Pettis County; enjoying holiday celebrations, parades, summer band concerts, Missouri State Fair, Scott Joplin Ragtime Festival, State Indian Powwow, Liberty Center, Katy Depot, and the Katy Trail. She loved to walk and drive the back-roads of Missouri.
She had an appreciation for poetry, crafts, nature and the four seasons. She loved people and many beloved pets, her CJ5 Jeep, railroad journeys, nature, and art especially about the sea. Helen traveled with great interest and intensity including a memorable road trip to Alaska; she befriended many people on trips both near and far.
Surviving are her husband of 74 years Frank R. Ellis of the home; Rod & Linda (Schnakenberg) Ellis of Pettis County and Overland Park, KS; three grandchildren: Jason, Jeremy & Jessica, all of Houston and Katy, Texas; and six Great Grandchildren in Texas.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, a sister Helen (Engler) Dirck, and most of her extended family.
The family will receive friends after 9:30 a.m. Monday, July 2, at First Christian Church. Funeral services will follow at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the church, with the Rev. Dr. Chad McMullin officiating.
Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
