Jacqueline “Jackie” Durnell, age 100, of Sedalia, died Thursday, May 28, 2020 at Sherbrooke Village Nursing Home in St. Louis, Mo.
She was born January 14, 1920 in Douglas County, a daughter of the late Voytil R. and Frances (Gott) Denney. On March 29, 1942, in Springfield, Mo, she was united in marriage to Dr. Orlis J. Durnell, who preceded her in death on August 6, 2005. They settled in Sedalia where the family was raised, and she thrived until 2012.
Jackie graduated from high school at 16, became accredited and taught school in the Springfield area. She was active in the First Christian Church in Sedalia and in the community. She went on to obtain her BS from Central Missouri State after her children were away from home. She continued to work in the community as a tutor for State Fair Community College, helping people obtain their GED, until she was in her 80’s.
She was loved and cherished by many people including her two sons; Larus and his wife Diane Durnell of Peoria, AZ, and Joe and his wife Sharon Durnell of Saint Louis, MO; Jackie’s grandchildren, Rebecca Durnell, Laura and her husband Tim Girard, Nathan and his wife Teresa Durnell, Bradley and his wife Sarah Durnell, Rachael Durnell, Erik Eimar, and April Eimar; her great grandchildren, Taylor Burkhead, Lorellin Durnell, Cattrina Scharbrough, Nick Cross, Jason Scharbrough, Cayman Girard, Venice Cross, Coen Girard, Julian Cross, Isaac Cross, Andrew Durnell, Isaac Durnell and OJ Durnell.
In addition to her parents and husband of 63 years, she was preceded in death by her brother William (Bill) Denney and her two sisters Fern Nivens, and Ruth Presley.
This gentle woman never knew a stranger and made any guest in her home feel welcome. She was an avid baker and gardener. Jackie was a strong and fierce woman who always put family first. Loyalty and determination always drove her path throughout her life.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions to State Fair Community College Foundation in care of Heckart Funeral Home.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday evening, June 3, 2020 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Heckart Funeral Home.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 4, 2020 at the funeral home.
Entombment will be at the Memorial Park Cemetery Mausoleum.
