James P. Johnson, 66, of Sedalia, passed away Wednesday, March 12, 2025.
He was born June 24, 1958, in Lee’s Summit, a son of the late Troy Vernon Brooks and Mary Edna (Gash) Johnson.
He was raised in Calhoun and graduated from Calhoun High School in 1976.
Jim spent a brief period in the Marine Corps and was honorably discharged. In his early years, he worked at a grain elevator, and then primarily did construction. He was a “jack of all trades and master at some”. Jim was proficient in all aspects of construction, including electrical and plumbing, and had a successful career as a handyman
He was a skilled woodworker and crafted many works of art including wishing wells, shadow boxes, baby beds, cedar chests, and jewelry boxes. He was an avid hunter for wildlife game, morel mushrooms, and on top of that, he was always excited to have a fishing pole in his hands. He always loved having his family over to grill.
Jim will be remembered as a funny, stubborn, ornery prankster who loved all his family and was always available to help them when needed.
He is survived by his partner, Patty Paxton, of the home; three children, Christopher Johnson, Jeramia Johnson (Katherine), all of Butler, and Mary Clear (Carl), of Calhoun; two step-children, Denise Meloy (Donnie), of Sedalia, and Douglass Paxton (Heather), of Alton, IL; two siblings, M.C. Johnson (Tina) and Pennie Wisdom, all of Calhoun; brother-in-law, Paul Day, of Sedalia; seven grandchildren, Cassidy, Kayliegh, Domanic, Cooper, Taylor, Trenton and Brooklyn; two step grandchildren, Madison and Evan; two step great-grandchildren, Remy and Roman; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Day.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, March 22, 2025 at Calhoun Cemetery with Rev. Daniel Yoder officiating.
Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Heckart Funeral Home.
