James Joseph “Jim” Mateja, 83, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 25, 2024 in Charlotte, NC.
Born on January 12, 1941 in St. Louis, MO, he was the second of three sons of William Joseph and Mary Ellen (McCauley) Mateja who preceded him in death.
Jim graduated from Smith Cotton High School in Sedalia, MO and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from Central Missouri State in Warrensburg, MO. Jim enjoyed a remarkable career with Coats North America where he retired after 45 years as Vice President of Sales and Marketing. Jim’s work took him across the United States and around the world.
Jim married Gale (Iversen) Mateja in Florida 33 years ago. Jim was transferred first to South Carolina and then to Charlotte, NC where they lived for the last 26 years. In retirement, they continued to embrace their love of travel. Jim spent time golfing at TPC Piper Glen where they were members. A lifelong sports enthusiast, he was passionate about both professional and college athletics and enjoyed staying active.
Jim loved to spend time with his family, his daughter and grandchildren. He enjoyed walking with his dogs and getting together with friends and neighbors. He will be remembered as “larger than life”, funny, warm, and the life of the party. Jim never met a stranger and had a gift for making friends wherever he went.
In addition to his loving wife Gale, survivors include his cherished daughter, Lisa Marie Nieder and her husband Bradley Nieder; his four grandchildren, Sydney, Kendall, Chad, and MacKenzie; and his two brothers, William Mateja and John Mateja.
Funeral services were held at Heckart Funeral Home in Sedalia, MO on Saturday, December 7, 2024. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the National Alzheimer’s Association.
