Janice Naser

Janice Naser, 94, of Sedalia, passed away Saturday, April 22, 2017, after a short illness, surrounded by family and friends.

She was born August 30, 1922, in Silver Creek, NE, daughter of Jasper W. and Louise Pearl “Lula” James Mickens.

Janice lived in Chicago for several years, before returning to Sedalia when she retired. While in Chicago she worked for Worldbook Encyclopedia as an administrative assistant.

Janice was a Christian and served the Lord through East Sedalia Baptist Church, where she was involved in various ministries.

She was active in the community, volunteering for many organizations, including the Retired Senior Volunteer Program, and had been awarded Volunteer of the Year in 2012 jointly with her friend, Leo Lewis, by the Center for Human Services. In 2005, Janice received “The President’s Volunteer Service Award” with the accompanying letter from President George Bush. Janice was always willing to do anything to help people.

When she wasn’t doing volunteer work and found the time, Janice enjoyed reading, sewing, crocheting, listening to music, and playing board and computer games.

Surviving are her son, Joseph Naser, and his wife, Ingrid, whom Janice referred to as her daughter, of Redwood City, CA; her sister, Ruth Franklin, of Sedalia; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three siblings, Kenneth Mickens, Harold Mickens and Jane Allen; and her special friend, Leo Lewis.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 27, at Heckart Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dr. Daryl Stagg officiating.

Casket bearers will be David Bergman Sr., David Bergman Jr., Don McMullin, John Hoffman, Jerry Laudenberger and Russell Dedrick.

Honorary bearers will be Charlie Bahner, Chris Kowalski, Leonard Butler, Don Morton, Wayne Stackhouse, Jeannie Bergman, Stephanie Dedrick, Linda Hoffman, Becky Carver, Christine Riley, Annie Craig, Felicia Conn and Patricia McMullin.

Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 26, at Heckart Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to American Cancer Society or East Sedalia Baptist Church.
