John C. Brazos, M.D.
Dr. John C. Brazos, of Sedalia, died on Monday, June 12, 2017 at the University of Missouri Hospital in Columbia, Missouri.
He was born July 31, 1920 in Westville, Illinois, son of immigrant Lithuanian parents, Anna and Joseph Brazus. Although they both came to America not speaking English, they succeeded in achieving citizenship. His father supported a large catholic family working as a coal miner.
Dr. Brazos was a veteran of WWII, serving in the Army Air Corps.
He was a graduate of the University of Illinois with a B.S. degree in Biology, in 1947, and with a Medical degree in 1949. He served an internship at Anker County Hospital in St. Paul, Minnesota, and practiced in Watertown, Wisconsin for four years. In 1957 he received his specialty in Urology at Milwaukee County Hospital and practiced as a urologist in Pettis County at Bothwell Regional Health Center from 1962 until 1982.
In 1947, in Westville, Illinois, he married Rose Gose. Surviving children are Barbara Brazos Whelove (Richard), of Columbia, Bruce Brazos (Janet), of Batavia, Illinois, John Brazos, Jr., of Rochester, New York; and a stepson, Kevin West (Deborah), of Ashland, Missouri.
In 1963, in Danville, Illinois, he married Helen West, RN, who survives.
He is also survived by eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one brother, Anthony Brazas (Beverly), of Westville, Illinois.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father, one son, Blaise; three sisters, Anne, Julia and Mary; and one brother, Joe.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, June 18, 2017, at Heckart Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dr. Chad McMullin officiating.
Casket bearers will be grandsons.
Burial will be in Smithton Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until time of the service at the funeral home.
Memorial contributions are suggested to First Christian Church in care of Heckart Funeral Home.
