John C. “Jack” Leftwich

John Clay “Jack” Leftwich, age 90, of Hughesville, died Friday, August 1, 2014, at Fair View Nursing Home.

He was born November 16, 1923, in Pettis County, son of Clay and Selma Leicher Leftwich. On February 14, 1954, at 5th Street Methodist Church in Sedalia, with the Rev. Lee Soxman officiating, he married Kathryn Harvey, who survives of the home.

He was a 50 plus year member of Wesley United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the Ambassadors Sunday School class. He was also a member of the Rural Electric Cooperative.

He was a graduate of Smith-Cotton High School, Class of 1941, and attended Central Business College.

Jack served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1945 during World War II as a Staff Sergeant with Quartermaster Supply.

He owned and operated his farm in rural Pettis County and was a cattleman and row-crop farmer.

In addition to his wife of 60 years, survivors include two sons, James J. Leftwich, of Palo Alto, CA, and Jeffrey L. Leftwich, and his wife, Monica, of Centertown, MO; a grandson, Derek Leftwich, and his wife, Michelle; a granddaughter, Shawna Leftwich; three sisters, Christine Metheney, of Napa, CA, Joan Yarboro, of Sedalia, and Mary Carolyn White, and her husband, Fred, of Gladstone.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant son, John Clay Jr.; and an infant sister, Marjorie.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 4, at Wesley United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Rick Adams and the Rev. Dr. Bruce Anderson officiating.

Casket bearers will be John Meehan, Jerry Greer, Ralph Spurrier, Lynn Shafer, Dennis Hagedorn and Steve Poort.

Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery, with military honors by the U.S. Army and VFW Post 2591.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Sunday, August 3, at Heckart Funeral Home.
