John Richard Woolery, 93, of Sedalia, died Nov. 25 at the Missouri Veterans Home in Warrensburg, MO.
He was born in Sedalia, MO Sept. 25, 1923 to Rose and Clark Woolery. After graduating from Smith Cotton High School in 1941, he served in the U.S. Maritime Service before enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1942. His Navy tenure took him to places such as New Guinea, the Philippines, Okinawa, and Newfoundland and earned him seven battle stars.
In 1944 he married Marjorie Bolch, also of Sedalia. They started a family and lived for a number of years in east coast Navy towns (Annapolis, Pensacola, Norfolk). John retired from the Navy in 1964 as a Senior Chief Petty Officer and in 1967 returned to Sedalia with his wife and daughter (son was in college in VA). He found employment in Sedalia with the U.S. Postal Service, Olin Conductors, Alcolac and UPS.
He was a life member of VFW Post 2591 and American Legion Post 642. John and Marjorie were long-time residents of the Read Center apartments. After Marjorie’s death, John moved to the Sylvia G. Thompson Residence Center, and then transferred to the Missouri Veterans Home in Oct. 2015. The family is grateful for the compassionate care given at these facilities.
John was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and his wife. Survivors include son John Russell Woolery of Sedalia and his wife Nancy of Chesapeake, VA; daughter Jan Powell of Kansas City; grandson Weston Drew Woolery with wife Kelly and their children Nolan and Marlin, of Greenville, NC.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, November 30 at Heckart Funeral Home in Sedalia. Interment will immediately follow the service at Memorial Park Cemetery.
