John W. Swisher
John Wesley Swisher went to be with the Lord on June 3, 2018. He was born in Sedalia, MO, on May 17, 1920, to Joseph Weldon, and Charlotte Esser Swisher. He attended First Methodist Church as a child, where he trusted in Christ as his Savior at the age of twelve. He graduated from Smith-Cotton High School in 1937. He received the call to serve his country in the U.S, Army Air Corps in World War II and was sent to Alconbury AFB in England. He was always quick to tell us that the length of his service was three years, seven months, and twenty-two days! After being discharged at the end of the war, he married his sweetheart, Mary Helen Brummet, on Dec. 27, 1945.
Mr. Swisher was a letter carrier in Sedalia for many years and could still remember who lived in the houses on his route as he drove about town. After retirement, he enjoyed going to garage sales, rooting for Mizzou, the Chiefs, and the Royals, and relaxing at his cabin at the lake. He was involved in coaching and playing baseball and softball in Sedalia for many years. John and Mary were founding members of Faith Baptist Church in Sedalia, where they served the Lord faithfully.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings, Virginia Landess, Doris Steele, Eileen Hopkins, Fred Swisher, and a baby sister, Arlene. He is survived by his son, Paul Swisher and his wife, Becky, Lee’s Summit, MO; two granddaughters, Michal Stoeltzing and husband Craig, and Meribeth Ezell and husband Steve; and six great-grandchildren, Luke Stoeltzing, Jake Stoeltzing, John Wesley Ezell, Sophie Ezell, Maggie Ezell, and William Ezell.
One of John’s favorite Bible verses was John 11:25, 26—“I am the Resurrection and the Life; he who believes in Me, though he were dead, yet shall he live, and whosoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Believest thou this?” John believed this, and because of this, we know we will be united with him in Heaven some day.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, June 8, at Memorial Park Cemetery, with the Rev. Dan Hankins officiating.
The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until service time Friday at Heckart Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to Faith Baptist Church.
