Joyce Marlene Bailey, 86, of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, formerly of Sedalia, died Monday evening, August 21, 2017 at her home, surrounded by her loving family, after a brief battle with cancer.

She was born August 16, 1931, in Orrick, Missouri to Wilbur and Frances Werle. Joyce attended Orrick High School, graduating in 1949. She married the love of her life, Robert Bailey, on March 20, 1954. He preceded her to heaven on August 31, 2008. She joined him in San Diego while he finished his service in the United States Navy. Upon their return to Missouri in 1956, she worked various secretarial jobs including as an administrative assistant at Bendix before becoming a full time homemaker.

Joyce, along with her husband, Bob, was an active member of First Baptist Church, Sedalia, Missouri for 45 years. She sang in the choir, served as Sunday school secretary for many years and sat on various church committees. Her wonderful culinary skills lead her to serve others by providing delicious meals on many occasions, particularly comforting others during times of loss by organizing funeral luncheons at the church. Upon her move to Lee’s Summit in late 2016 to be closer to family, she joined First Baptist Church, Lee’s Summit, and began to form new friendships.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and her nephew, Robbie Werle. She is survived by her daughters Julie (John) Glisson of Overland Park, Kansas and Janet (Jim) Durbin of Lee’s Summit, Missouri. She is also survived by grandchildren Justin Glisson and wife Erika, Nathaniel Glisson, Bailey (Durbin) Roenigk and husband Brett, Rob Durbin and Ben Durbin, as well as great grandchildren Payton and Averie Glisson. She leaves her brother, Raymond Werle of Orrick, Missouri, brother-in-law, Glen Bailey of Independence, Missouri and sister-in-law Mary Lou Bailey of Lathrop, Missouri as well as nieces, nephews and a large circle of friends.

Visitation will be Friday, August 25, 2017 at First Baptist Church, Sedalia, Missouri from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. with funeral service immediately following at 1:00 p.m. Graveside service and burial will follow at South Point Cemetery in Orrick, Missouri at 3:30 p.m.

Arrangements are in the care of Heckart Funeral Home.

The family suggests memorial contributions to First Baptist Church Sedalia, Meals on Wheels, American Cancer Society or a charity of your choice.
