Leonard Henry Semkin, 94, of Smithton, passed away Saturday, October 7, 2017, at Bothwell Regional Health Center.
He was born January 7, 1923, in Florence, the son of Walter Henry Semkin and Emma M. Shulz Semkin.
Mr. Semkin served in the United States Army during World War II and was awarded a Purple Heart.
On April 9, 1948, at Lake Creek United Methodist Church near Smithton, he was married to Betty Jean Meyer, who preceded him in death on July 25, 2012.
Lennie owned and operated Lennie’s Service, a service station and tire shop, for 32 years. He was a member of Smithton United Methodist Church, Sedalia Lodge 236 AF & AM, VFW Post 2591, Smithton Senior Center and the Good Sam’s Camping Club. He served on the Smithton Volunteer Fire Department from 1954 to 1995. He enjoyed fishing, golfing and camping with friends and family.
Surviving are his daughter, Sharon Atkinson, and her husband, John, of Sedalia; two grandsons, Brett Atkinson, and his wife Pam, of Sedalia, and Blake Atkinson, and his wife, Suzie, of Springfield; two great-grandchildren, Trenton and Quinn; and his sister, Lavera Harrell, of Sedalia.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Dorene Zimmerschied.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 14, at Heckart Funeral Home, with the Rev. Jason Veale officiating.
Casket bearers will be Steve Goldsmith, Dan Page, Warren Anderson, Allen Zimmerschied, Alex Harrell and Dick Harlan.
Burial will be in Smithton Cemetery, with military honors by the U.S. Army and VFW Post 2591.
The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home.
