Lorene Worrell

Lorene (Lorain) Monroe Worrell, 85, of Sedalia, passed away Sunday, May 24, 2015, at Bothwell Regional Health Center.

She was born November 12, 1929, in Osage County, MO, (Pointer’s Creek), the youngest of six children born to Mark (Miller) Monroe and Sophia Ellen (Branson) Monroe.

On March 27, 1948, she married Phillips Doyle Worrell at the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), in Jefferson City, MO. He died February 26, 1998. From this union one child, Gary Linn Worrell, was born October 31, 1949.

She attended high school in Linn, MO, leaving school early to join the world of work as a teenager. She later completed her high school diploma on her own initiative, as an adult. Through the years, she primarily worked retail (Sears, J.C. Penney, Taystee Bread). After retiring from Taystee Bread (as store manager), and after the death of her husband, she again worked, part-time, at Walmart, initially in the pharmacy department and then as a greeter, for several years. Due to health problems, she then retired from Walmart a few years ago.

She enjoyed her family (immediate and extended), traveling, cooking, sewing/knitting, and her many friends over the years (some lifelong). She was a member of the First Christian Church, Pointer’s Creek Cemetery Association, and N.A.R.V.E. She also volunteered over the past several years at FCC, Open Door, and Meals on Wheels. She survived breast cancer twice, but succumbed to a failing heart.

She is survived by her son, Gary Linn Worrell, of the home; one sister-in-law, Imogene Monroe; five nephews, Eugene Monroe, Charles Monroe, Jerry Monroe, Keith Monroe and John Monroe; five nieces, Lillian Gove, Carolyn Sue Snethen, Mary Lou Buie, Judy Schaefer and Marchia Monroe; and many great and great-great-nephews and nieces.

Besides her parents and her husband, she was predeceased by two brothers, Reed Monroe and Alvin Monroe; and by three sisters, Cora Ellen (in infancy), Elsie Callis and Mabel Johnson.

Friends may call after 8:30 a.m. Thursday, May 28, at Heckart Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Cremation will follow and graveside services will be held at a future date at Crown Hill Cemetery, with the Rev. Chad McMullin officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the First Christian Church Kokendoffer Student Fund and/or the Capital Campaign.
