Marvin L. Cunningham

Marvin Lester Cunningham, 81, of Sedalia, passed away Monday, January 16, 2023, at Fair View Nursing Home.

He was born September 23, 1941, near Mt. Leonard, MO, in Saline County, a son of Claude Eaton Cunningham and Elsie Edna Cunningham (nee).  On August 24, 1962, he married Judith Irene “Judy” Rothganger, who preceded him in death on July 27, 2022.  Marvin and Judy met at Sedalia’s North 65 Café in 1961.

Marvin served in the United States Army originally enlisting in October of 1958 and serving through July of 1961.  After a period of not being able to find well paying, steady work, he re-enlisted in June of 1962 and served through June of 1979.  Marvin served in total about 22 years, primarily serving in the Army Security Agency during the Vietnam War.  He earned his Law Degree in 1969 from Blackstone School of Law in Chicago, IL, and he served in the Army Judge Advocate General Corp after Vietnam.  Following the Army Marvin worked for Pettis County as a legal assistant.  He enjoyed staying busy on the farm, usually clearing brush and building fences.

Survivors include two sons, Keith Cunningham, of Oxnard, CA, and Gary Cunningham (Cammie), of Fulton, MO; six grandchildren, Ryan, Collin, Olivia (Hoek), Carlie, Sophia and Marta; one great-grandson, Phineas; two brothers, Michael Cunningham of Georgetown, TX, Ronald Cunningham (Cheri) of Sedalia, MO; two sisters, Peggy Cunningham of Independence, MO, and Connie Cunningham (Bill Mehmert) of Centertown, MO; one sister-in-law, Jerry Kay Rothganger, of Sedalia.

In addition to both of his parents and his wife, Marvin was preceded in death by five brothers, Donald “Don” Wayne, Milton Dean, Charles “Charlie” Augustus, and James “Jimmy” Douglas Cunningham; two sisters, Betty Lou May and Patricia Ann Woods.

Visitation will be at 1:00 p.m. until service time on Saturday, January 21, 2023, at Heckart Funeral Home in Sedalia.  Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday at the funeral home.  Burial will follow the funeral service and be at the Mount Herman Cemetery.
