Mary Katherine Cope, 66, of Sedalia, passed away Sunday, April 30, 2023 at Boone Hospital in Columbia.
She was born June 29, 1956, in Okinawa, Japan.
Mary was almost three years old when she came to live in the States. She lived in Montgomery, AL, two homes in Piscataway, MD, where she started kindergarten. In third grade they relocated to Alexandria, VA. In the summer of 1965, the family moved to Sedalia where she attended two schools during fourth grade. She graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1974 and attended State Fair Community College earning 60 hours of college credit. After her marriage to Danny H. Cope on April 15, 1978, they moved to Creston, IA and Ottawa, KS before their first anniversary. They returned to the Sedalia area in 1989 and made their home in the country. In March of 2020, she moved to Sedalia.
Some of her childhood memories include attending the funeral procession of John F. Kennedy at Arlington National Cemetery, hosting the Vice President of South Vietnam for dinner at the family home; and with secret service waiting in the driveway, President Harry Truman’s daughter played bridge at their home.
She was blessed with travel and had travelled from the East Coast to the West Coast, including Hawaii. Mary visited Sydney, Australia twice as an adult as well as Hong Kong, Thailand, Vietnam, Okinawa, Canada, and up and down the east coast visiting Mount Vernon, Kitty Hawk and many other historical landmarks.
Her hobbies included reading, counted cross stitch, listening to music, and she preferred mowing the lawn rather than housework. While living in Kansas, she enjoyed camping, boating and water skiing.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Danny; her mother, Barbara Jean (Botz) English; a sister, Deborah Ann (English) Roth; and her dogs, Spot, Key, Birdie, Wolf, Elizabeth and Kate; and her cats, Dorothy, Scruffy and Miselto.
Survivors include two nieces, Lisa Shellhorn (Larry) and Sara Wessing; a nephew, Matthew Hopkins (Kassie); several great nieces and nephews; and Danny’s niece, Debbie (Cope) Williams.
Greet the family at 9:00 am with a funeral service to follow at 10:00 am, Saturday, May 13, 2023 at the Church of Jesus Christ Latter-day Saints, 1201 W. Broadway, Sedalia.
A Celebration of Mary’s Life will begin at 2pm, Saturday, May 13, 2023 at The Salvation Army Community Center, 1200 E. Broadway, Sedalia.
Honorary pallbearers will be Lisa Shellhorn, Matthew Hopkins, Karen Parks, Melissa Stout, Colleen Pollitt, Preston Carr and Micheal Nilson.
Memorial contributions are suggested to The Salvation Army for Sedalia.
