Richard Emmett Burton

Richard Emmett Burton, 86, of Chillicothe, passed away Friday, December 18, 2020 at E.W. Thompson Health & Rehabilitation Center in Sedalia.

He was born September 9, 1934 in Livingston County, a son of the late Elmo Gordon and Melva Lucille (Seek) Burton. On October 25, 1958, he married Betty Lou Shobe and to this union were born two children, Penny Sue and Debby Lynn. On December 5, 1986, he married Bernita Faye Frizzell and to this union were born three children, Richard Elmo, Tessie Lynn and Ashlee Marie.

Richard worked in construction as a dozer operator building freeways and colleges in San Diego, California from 1961-1968. He returned to Chillicothe in 1968 to help his parents on the family farm, eventually taking over the operation. He also worked at the Tina Sale Barn for 24 years until his health declined.

He had a love for horses, especially Little Star and Cochise. He liked to hitch up a team of horses to cultivate the garden. He also loved his dog, Hawk.

He enjoyed his Harley Davidson motorcycle as well as hunting and fishing. Most of all, he appreciated time spent with family and friends. Richard will be remembered for being a great joke teller and never meeting a stranger.

Survivors include: five children, Penny Sue McCracken (Melvin), of Chillicothe, Debby Lynn Bush (Timothy), of Bogard, Richard Elmo Burton, of Chillicothe, Tessie Lynn Gutierrez (Cain), and Ashlee Marie Tobar (Jorge), all of Marshall; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Bernita, who passed away in 2007; his first wife, Betty, who passed away in 2000; three brothers, Jewell Elmo Burton, Harry Vernon Burton, and Everett Roscoe Burton; a sister, Annielee Grace Williams; and daughter-in-law, Cindy Burton.

It is Richard’s wishes that no service be held.

Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Heckart Funeral Home, Sedalia.
