Richard (Rick) Leroy Homan passed away Friday, February 11, 2022, after suffering life-long injuries from an automobile accident back in 1984, at the age of 27. He lived to be 64.
Rick was born on November 13, 1957, in Sedalia, Missouri, the son of the late Edwin Leroy Homan and Orella Smith. He was the oldest of four siblings, Connie, Joe & Vickie Homan, and a stepsister, Lola Smith.
During high school, Rick described himself as a “wild and crazy hippie” who played the drums in a garage band dubbed AA Bottom, the reverse of ZZ Top.
Homan joined the Navy in 1975. He was a second-class petty officer aircraft electrician and traveled around the world three times on the USS Kennedy aircraft carrier. The USS Kennedy sailed along the coastlines of Germany and France on minesweeper operations. Homan’s next assignment was in the air base in Sigonella, Sicily, where he did electrical maintenance on P-3 patrol airplanes that flew missions above the Mediterranean Sea.
In 1981, after being discharged from the Navy, Homan returned home where he was an electrician for Mid-Mo Electric Co. in Sedalia. He also worked with the civil service at Whiteman Air Force Base.
Driving home from Whiteman one evening after work, he was involved in a single-vehicle accident in which he rolled his Jeep and ultimately suffered a traumatic brain injury and paralysis. Because of his injuries, he ended up in multiple nursing homes. He lived the last 17 years of his life at the Missouri Veterans Home in Warrensburg, where he received exceptional care and was loved by the entire staff.
Rick was truly one of a kind and will be missed by all that had the privilege of knowing him. Despite his circumstances, he made the absolute best of every day and always had a joke to share such as, “When I grow up, I’m going to be a sit-down comedian.” His sense of humor was unmatched.
Survivors include his children, Michelle Leffert and Richard Lucas (Amanda) Homan; his grandchildren, Alaina, Gage, Eli & Zane; his sisters, Connie (Bill) Chevalier & Vickie Homan; a stepsister, Lola (J.D.) Smith; their children and grandchildren, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, stepmother, Ruby, and younger brother, Joseph Homan.
Private graveside services will be held at a later date at Crown Hill Cemetery.
