Robert Layton Hiltenburg, 79, formerly of Sedalia, passed away Saturday, September 1, 2018, in St. Peters.

He was born September 10, 1938, in Sedalia, the son of Clarence J. and Clara W.S. (Bardwell) Hiltenburg.

On June 7, 1959, in Sedalia, he married Judith Carolyn (Grimes), who preceded him in death on April 3, 2012.

Bob was a 1956 graduate of Smithton High School, graduating Valedictorian of his class. He earned a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from University of Missouri-Columbia. He worked 35 years at Illinois Power in various positions including Electrical Engineer, Manager of Data Processing, and retired as Operations Manager, Southern Division.

Bob loved being outdoors. He enjoyed planting trees and fishing. He did a lot of genealogy work and had published three books about his family. He was an active member of Wesley United Methodist Church and was the founder of the Wesley Way Foundation. He was also a Mason while living in Illinois.

Surviving are a daughter, Julie Smith and her husband, Allan, of St. Charles; a son, Greg Hiltenburg, of St. Charles; five grandchildren, Andrew, Madelyn, Tyler, Jackson and Dashlyn; and two sisters, Virginia Ross and Diana Martinez.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Gloria Prater.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, September 8, at Heckart Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dennis Harper officiating.

Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Down Syndrome Association of Greater St. Louis.
