Sandra S. Bird

Sandra Star Bird (Hall) passed away at home on April 5, 2017. Sandra was born on March 29, 1938 in Springfield, Mo. Her late mother, Radene Coe, (Hall) did not list a father for the child. Sandra was raised by her grandparents, Andrew and Emma Hall, in Republic, MO. Sandra graduated from Republic High School and attended the Drawn Business College in Springfield. During her career she held a variety of sales and management positions in the retail merchandising, consumer electronics, and the industrial controls field.

Sandra’s first marriage, in the early 1960’s, did not survive due to alcoholism and abuse, and it produced one child, a daughter, Lisa.  In 1970 she married Kenneth L. Bird of St. Louis. Sandra enjoyed travel and had a varied life experience. The marriage produced a son, James A. Bird. The couple lived in Bloomington, IL, Detroit, MI, Batavia, NY, Boston, MA, and finally settled in Chicago, IL, where Sandra became interested in animal rescue, a pursuit she continued until her death.

Upon retirement to Lincoln, MO, Sandra became interested in local history, holding member ships in the Benton County Historical Society, the Cole Camp Area Historical Society, and the Pettis County Historical Society. Sandra served one term on the Lincoln, MO City Council, and was also Secretary and eventually, Chairperson of the Trustees, of the Sedalia Chapter of the Missouri Archeological Society.  Sandra also continued animal rescue efforts through the Stover and Sedalia Animal Shelters. She also enjoyed attending the Sedalia Symphony, Missouri State Fair, and the Mozarkite Show in Lincoln, MO.

Sandra was a former member of Zion Lutheran Church, in Lincoln. She recently chose to return to her original faith, the Episcopal Church, through membership at Calvary Episcopal Church in Sedalia.

Sandra is survived by her husband Kenneth, of the home , a son , James Bird, of St. Louis, a daughter , Lisa Vinson, of Dallas, TX, one grandchild, Teresa Frazier, and two great grandchildren, Isaiah Gammill, and Gabriel Frazier, cousins, George Ann Sayers, Lacey Frazier, Seth Howerton, Rick Sayers, Jackie Sayers, Tony Sayers, and Kim Carter.

It was Sandra’s request that her remains be cremated at the Heckart Crematory in Sedalia, and the ashes scattered at a location dear to her, to be known only by her husband. A memorial service will be held for Sandra at Calvary Episcopal Church, Sedalia, MO, on Saturday, April 15 at 10:30 AM. Any memorials should be directed to the Stover or Sedalia animal shelters or the Bothwell Canon Cancer Center Fund.
