Virgie Evelyn (Hicks) Jackson, age 88, of Sedalia, Missouri, passed away April 4, 2021 at University Hospital in Columbia, Missouri.

She was born May 21, 1932 in Girdner, MO, daughter of Warren and Maude (Knight) Hicks, the youngest of 13 children. She graduated from Mtn. Grove High School in 1950, she had been elected Class Football Queen during her Senior Year. On December 23, 1950, she was married to her high school sweetheart, William Sarge Jackson in a double ceremony with her best childhood friend. Three (3) children were added to this union; Sandra Kay Clark, Vicki Rae Jackson and Charles Albert (Chuck) Jackson, all of the Kansas City area.

Virgie left Mtn. Grove shortly after high school to follow her Air Force husband to various states where he was stationed, even a tour in Japan. In 1973, the family moved to Sedalia, MO after her husband retired from the Air Force. They loved to travel and traveled to all of the States as well as several foreign countries. They worked with Christian Ministries, in Guadeloupe, France, and Puerto Rico.

Virgie spent 25 years as a Medical Records Technician working in various hospitals, nursing homes and several doctor’s offices around Sedalia. She loved to sing in her church choir and also with the Helen G. Steele Music Club where she was a member since 1985 and was President of the Club in 2005-2007. She was active in the American Red Cross Organization for 30 years. She was a member of the former Sedalia Dinner club, and Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP). She came to know the Lord in May, 1956 and was an active member of Maplewood Church since 1973.

She enjoyed people and volunteered for many activities. She and her husband were volunteer co-instructors for the AARP Driver Safety Classes for Seniors. They also worked several years for the Missouri State Fair Foundation. She usually said “yes” for anything that was asked of her. She also loved to sew, crochet and read. She could often be found curled up with a book or crocheting afghans for baby gifts or for the Birthright Organization.

She is survived by her husband of 70 years and her three children. Survivors also include two grandchildren, Kim (Billy) Smith and Kelly (Shawn) Duvall and four great-grandchildren, Tyler, Kristin, Cole and Keaton. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Jewell Spurgeon and Lugene Dobson and three brothers, Jesse Hicks, Bruce Hicks and Barney Hicks, and several half brothers and sisters.

Funeral services will be held at Heckart Funeral Home, 903 S. Ohio, Sedalia, MO, on Friday, April 9, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. Visitation will be 5:00 p.m.-7:00 p.m. Thursday, April 8, 2021 at the funeral home.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, April 10, 2021 at Hillcrest Cemetery in Mt. Grove, MO. Pastors Eddie Brown, Bob Wauchope and Darrell Loughridge will officiate.
