Virgil Martin Baker, 96, of Sedalia, Missouri, passed away Monday, June 21, 2021 at Rest Haven Convalescent and Retirement Home in Sedalia.
He was born July 3, 1924 in Clarksburg, Missouri, the son of Raymond and Ethel (Simmers) Baker, who preceded him in death, as did his wife, Jessie; brother, Lloyd Baker; and sister, Faye Martin.
Virgil was a WWII Army veteran who served in the European Theater of Operations from July 19, 1944 to June 26, 1946. He met his future wife through an Army buddy. On January 23, 1949, Virgil married Jessie (Putnam) Baker. Through this union three sons were born. Virgil retired from the U.S. Postal Service as a postmaster in 1984.
Surviving are: son, Mel Baker; son, Martin Baker; son, Dean Baker and wife Sheri; granddaughter, Kelly Baker; grandsons, Chris and Spencer Baker; and great-granddaughters, Zoey and Maddy Brown, and MacKenzie Baker. Virgil is also survived by a sister, Helen Wallenmeyer; and a sister-in-law, Pat Baker.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, June 28, 2021 at Heckart Funeral Home, Sedalia, with the Rev. Leroy Moon officiating.
Casket bearers will be Spencer Baker, Chris Baker (grandson), John Schmidt, Sonny Broyles, Alan Green and Chris Baker (nephew).
Honorary bearers will be Otis and Sherrill Brock, Paul Martin, Warren Preuitt and Rodney Boone.
Burial will be in Syracuse Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until service time Monday at the funeral home.
