Virginia Giokaris, age 97, of Sedalia, died Sunday, November 16, 2014, at Sylvia G. Thompson Residence Center.
She was born May 2, 1917, on a farm at Mitchell, SD, to Leo and Nettie Rowley. She was married to James D. Giokaris, who died April 4, 1996.
Mrs. Giokaris was a graduate of the Mitchell High School and the Mitchell Business College. She was employed in the Office of the Inspector General of the Army in Washington, D.C. She moved to Sedalia with her family in May of 1960.
Surviving are a daughter, Peggy Giokaris, of Independence; two sons, James D. Giokaris, Jr., of Lee’s Summit, and Alan Giokaris, of Mount Kisco, N.Y.; five grandchildren; Marge Meyer, her best friend for over 50 years; and extended family, Gary Skiles, of Blue Springs.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother; and two sisters.
She was a member of the Broadway Presbyterian Church, SOROSIS, the Bothwell Hospital Auxiliary, the Pettis County Historical Society, the P.E.O. Sisterhood, and the Retired Federal and State Associations.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, November 20, at the Broadway Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Rob Hughes officiating.
Pallbearers will be Mark Callis, Mike Cowen, Scott Gardner, and Gary Skiles.
Honorary pallbearers will be Don Barnes, Jim Callis, and Jim Buckley.
Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at 10:00 a.m. until time of service Thursday at the church.
Memorial contributions are suggested to the Broadway Presbyterian Church.
