Wesley Lewis “Sonny” Shirley, 81, of Sedalia, passed away Tuesday, July 31, 2018, at Rest Haven Convalescent and Retirement Home.
He was born March 21, 1937, in Sedalia, son of Walter E. Shirley and Adele (Bashore) Birch.
On March 25, 1960, in Lee’s Summit, he married Bethel Joy (Allee), who preceded him in death on July 25, 2013.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. Sonny had various jobs over the years, including Montgomery Wards, Mid-Mo Electric, and working for the ambulance company. He was a member of Bethany Baptist Church, 40 & 8 Voiture 333, and VFW Post 2591. He enjoyed taking trips to Colorado, watching the Denver Broncos, going to horse shows, and photography.
Surviving are a daughter, Linda Shirley, of Sedalia; a half-brother, Frank Walter Shirley, of Arizona; and nieces, Laura, Shannon, Myra and Kyla.
In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Logan.
Funeral services and a 40 & 8 service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 4, at Heckart Funeral Home, with Pastor Craig Bowen officiating.
Casket bearers will be Danny Dunn, Richard Young, Paul Meyer, Mark Walje, Alan Allee and Jimmy Cooper.
Honorary bearers will be Randy Mullins, Mike Johnson and Seth Johnson.
Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to Bethany Baptist Church.
