William Lewis Hammond, 78, of Chesterfield, formerly of Sedalia, passed away Tuesday, September 5, 2023 at Friendship Village, Chesterfield.
He was born June 6, 1945, in Sedalia, son of the late Lewis B. and Bessie R. (Hurt) Hammond. On December 2, 1972, in Lexington, Massachusetts, he married Barbara Marie Flynn, who survives.
Bill spent his youth in Sedalia. After graduating from Central Missouri State College in 1968 he began travelling the world with the U.S. Air Force. He lived in many places, including meeting his wife in Okinawa, Japan, having a daughter Heather and son Christopher in Wichita, Kansas and son Gregory in Montgomery, Alabama. The family spent time in Louisiana, North Carolina, Indiana, multiple stays in California, Arizona, South Carolina and even some time on Guam.
In retirement Bill and Barbara spent many years outside of Tucson, Arizona before returning to Missouri to be near grandchildren.
William attended University of Missouri – Columbia for a year, ultimately transferring to Central Missouri State College to finish a BS in Business Administration. He obtained a Master’s degree from Auburn University while serving in the Air Force.
Bill started out in the Air Force being drafted as he finished at Central Missouri State College. He went to San Antonio for basic training as a non-commissioned officer before being commissioned in September 1968. He spent the next 30 years in service of the country he loved. He spent time in pilot training and the missile program early in his career. He then spent time within the air refueling tanker and cargo missions across various installations. He retired from the United States Air Force in June 1998. After retiring from the Air Force, he spent a few more years working for SEI in St. Louis and Boeing supporting Air Force contracts.
As a young man William was heavily involved with sports cars around Sedalia and Jefferson City, Missouri. While in the military he spent most of his hobby time playing golf and wrenching cars. He transferred his love of golf and cars to both of his sons.
In addition to his wife, Barbara, William is survived by two sons, Christopher Hammond (Natalie), of Wildwood, MO, and Gregory Hammond (Christi), of Erie, CO; a sister, Sandra Kinas, of Dallas, TX; an aunt, Martha South (Earl), of Sedalia; and three grandchildren, Jacqueline, Daniel and Henry.
In addition to his parents, William was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Heather Marie Hammond, who passed away in 1975.
Family and friends will gather 11:00 am until 11:40 am Monday, September 11, 2023 at Heckart Funeral Home prior to processing to Memorial Park Cemetery for a 12:00 pm (noon) graveside service.
Full military honors will be conducted at graveside by the United States Air Force.
