Wilma Q. Pummill

Wilma Quay Pummill, age 98, slipped into the arms of her heavenly father on July 3rd, 2021, surrounded by her family. Wilma was born on May 16, 1923 in Grandview, Missouri to Beulah Petty Stone and Wilmer F. Stone.

In 1939, Wilma met Lawrence Pummill on a hayride in Houstonia. They were married in 1940. When Lawrence entered the army in WWII, Wilma moved to Kansas City and worked at Pratt & Whitney. She was an authentic “Rosie the Riveter.”  They were married 29 years and had four children before Lawrence’s death in 1969. She never remarried.

Wilma was loving, loyal, intelligent and talented. Playing piano by ear came easily as did her natural sales ability. She was a wonderful cook and hosted many family dinners. Wilma loved watching her sons and grandchildren play sports. She often offered up her glasses to umpires and referees. In 1976, Wilma and her sons founded Pummill’s Sporting Goods in Sedalia. She worked there until she retired at age 85.

Wilma enjoyed the Sedalia senior center and loved playing bingo and card games. She called Prevention Magazine her doctor and she loved political debate. She was a Republican and proudly served as president of Pettis County Pachyderm. Wilma loved animals and considered her dogs and cats family members. She gave her life to Christ at age 14 and was a member of the Houstonia Baptist Church. In her younger years she taught Sunday school, vacation bible school and served in many capacities. Her favorite Bible passages were John 3:16 and Ecclesiastes 3:1-11 and her favorite hymn was How Great Thou Art.

Wilma was preceded in death by her parents; husband Lawrence, and eldest son Larry. Also siblings Hazel Robinett, Peggy White, and Harry Stone.

She leaves behind her son Terry Pummill (Robin) in Springfield, Mo, son Gary Pummill, Sedalia, daughter Jeanie Pummill Windes (Bill), Overland Park, KS and daughter-in-law Minnie Pummill of Sedalia.  She had nine grandchildren and twenty-one great-grandchildren.
